Arthroscopic forceps are slim, long-shaft hand instruments with small jaws at the tip that punch, grasp or cut. Punch forceps here include straight basket punches, upbiters, backbiters and rotary designs that bite to the left or right. Grasping forceps include ratcheting designs, and you will also see biopsy forceps, scoop punches and suture punches. Makers in this category include ConMed Linvatec, Acufex, Arthrex and Stryker. Clear Choice Medical is not affiliated with these manufacturers.

When you compare arthroscopy forceps, start with shaft diameter and working length. Many listings state the shaft size, such as 2.75 mm or 3.4 mm. Then check the jaw pattern and bite direction, such as straight, 15 degrees up or 90 degrees left. Handle style varies too, and some Acufex basket punches here use a cigar handle. Match the catalog number on the shaft or handle to the one you are replacing. Availability changes as items sell, so check each listing for exact specifications.

Common questions about Arthroscopic Forceps

What is the difference between an upbiter and an upswept arthroscopic punch?

An upbiter angles the jaws upward at the tip, while an upswept punch angles the shaft itself. Smith & Nephew describes its Acufex upbiter tip as an angled curve of about 1/4 inch. Its upswept style uses an angled shaft instead. Arthrex titles also treat tip angle and shaft shape as separate details. One Arthrex punch has a tip angled 15 degrees up on a straight 3.4 mm shaft. Another pairs the same tip with a shaft curved 15 degrees up. When you match a replacement, confirm the tip angle and the shaft shape as two specs.

Why can the same arthroscopic punch have two catalog numbers?

One tip design can carry a different catalog number for each handle style. The Smith & Nephew Acufex catalog lists a Pro handle number and a loop handle number for many punches. Its Duckbill upbiter, for example, is 7207058 with the Pro handle and 012014 with the loop handle. The same catalog offers a cigar handle on rotary basket punches and scissors. Two listings with different numbers may therefore share the same jaw. Match the tip description and the handle style to the instrument you are replacing. The photos help confirm which handle a punch has.

What is an arthroscopic alligator grasper?

An arthroscopic alligator grasper is a grasping forceps with a serrated alligator jaw on a slim shaft. Smith & Nephew lists Acufex alligator graspers in 2.7 mm straight and upcurved versions. It also lists an Alligator Max pattern. Arthrex makes an alligator hook tip grasper with a 4.2 mm straight shaft. Handles differ as well. Graspers with the Acufex grasper handle use an infinite-position sliding lock, but Acufex Pro graspers do not lock. When you read a listing, compare jaw style and shaft diameter. Then check the tip curve and handle lock.
