An electrosurgical electrode is the working tip that delivers current from the generator, through a cable, handpiece or resectoscope. Laparoscopic monopolar electrodes on this page include L-hook, spatula and needle designs. Several have an insulated outer sheath or a suction channel. Resection electrodes include loops and roller electrodes, often listed by French size. Button electrodes and 6 French cysto electrodes also appear, along with da Vinci cautery instruments. Brands include Stryker, Karl Storz, Olympus and Aesculap.
Compare the tip shape first, then the working length and shaft diameter. Laparoscopic listings often give a 5 mm diameter with a working length near 33 cm. For resectoscope electrodes, check the French size and any direction of view noted in the title, such as 12 degrees. Monopolar and bipolar surgical electrodes are not interchangeable, so confirm the energy type your system uses. Check the connector pin against the cable you plan to use.
Individual electrodes sell and new ones are added, so this page changes over time. Browse the electrodes above to compare tips and lengths, or contact Clear Choice Medical with a question.
Common questions about Electrodes
What is a loop electrode?
A loop electrode is an electrosurgical tip shaped as a wire loop. Olympus lists loops in various sizes among its Resection in Saline electrodes for its resectoscopes. That range also includes band, knife and roller ball electrodes. Olympus states that only its own electrodes are designed to its resectoscope specifications. Loops also exist for handheld electrosurgical handles. Valleylab's Force 2 manual lists a 3/8 inch cutting and biopsy loop among its accessories. Match a resectoscope loop to the maker and system of your working element.
What do L-hook, J-hook and spatula mean on a laparoscopic electrode?
They are tip style names, and each one names the shape of the electrode's working end. Encision's reusable 5 mm electrodes show how wide the range can be. Its catalog lists L-hook, J-hook and needle tips as well as spatula and button designs. It also lists variants such as flat-J, L-wedge, L-diamond and square-L. Each is listed at 35 cm long. The tip name does not state the shaft diameter, working length or connector. Read those details separately in the title and photos.
Are electrosurgical electrodes reusable or single-use?
Both kinds exist, and the manufacturer's labeling states which one an electrode is. A reusable device is intended for repeated use, with cleaning and reprocessing between uses. A single-use device is intended for one use, or for one patient during a single procedure. Encision, for example, catalogs fixed-tip laparoscopic electrodes in disposable and reusable versions. Reusable designs come with the maker's reprocessing instructions, which may state a reuse life. Reuse decisions then follow that labeling and your facility's own policy. Check the listing title and package photos for a reusable or single-use marking.
