This page gathers laparoscopes from Stryker, Smith & Nephew and Olympus, along with other makers. You can compare 0, 30 and 45 degree directions of view. Some listings give the smaller diameter as 5.5 mm. Bariatric models extend the working length to 45 cm. Operative laparoscopes carry a working channel for passing an instrument. Brand names describe the maker only. Clear Choice Medical is an independent dealer and has no affiliation with any manufacturer.

To match a laparoscope, start with three figures: outer diameter, direction of view and working length. Diameter decides the trocar size, so compare it with the trocars your facility already uses. Working length separates standard and bariatric versions of the same diameter. Makers also give each length and direction of view its own model number, so confirm that number before you buy. The Clear Choice Medical guide to rigid endoscope angles and sizes explains what these markings mean. Clear Choice Medical offers free domestic shipping and a 30-day warranty against functional defects. All sales are final. We do not accept returns.

Common questions about Laparoscopes

What is the difference between a 5 mm and a 10 mm laparoscope?

The difference is the outer diameter, which also sets the trocar size a laparoscope passes through. Karl Storz lists a 6 mm trocar size for its 5 mm, 29 cm laparoscope. Its 10 mm, 31 cm laparoscope lists an 11 mm trocar size. Stryker and Smith & Nephew list some smaller models at 5.5 mm, so match the exact figure. Diameter says nothing about direction of view or working length. Read those two figures separately in each listing. A 5 mm figure can also describe a channel rather than the outer diameter. Stryker, for example, lists an operating laparoscope at 10 mm with a 5 mm working channel.

What is a bariatric laparoscope?

A bariatric laparoscope is a laparoscope with an extended working length. Stryker lists Precision Ideal Eyes bariatric laparoscopes at 45 cm in both 5.5 mm and 10 mm diameters. Two of its standard Precision Ideal Eyes models list 30 cm at 5.5 mm and 33 cm at 10 mm. Stryker gives each length its own catalog number, such as 0502-503-030 for 30 cm and 0502-513-030 for 45 cm. So read the working length itself rather than relying on the word bariatric. Then match the diameter and direction of view as you would on any other laparoscope. Check the listing title and photos for those markings.

Is a laparoscope telescope the same as a laparoscope?

Yes, some makers use telescope as the catalog name for a rigid laparoscope. Olympus, for example, names its WA50373B a telescope. The AccessGUDID device database files that same model under the term rigid optical laparoscope. The telescope is the optical part on its own. Stryker's camera guide tells you to attach the endoscope to a coupler on the camera head. Its next step is to attach a light cable to the light post on the endoscope. So camera heads, couplers and light cables are separate items from the telescope. Whichever word a title uses, compare the diameter, direction of view and working length.
