Surgical hemostats on this page include Kelly, Crile and Mosquito patterns. Other hemostatic forceps here follow the Kocher and Rochester-Pean patterns. You will also find Heaney clamps and Mixter right-angle clamps. Vascular clamps come in DeBakey, Cooley and Glover patterns, plus Fogarty and bulldog clamps. The page also carries Glassman intestinal clamps, Backhaus towel clamps and tubing clamps. Makers on these clamps include V. Mueller, Jarit and Codman, plus Pilling and Symmetry Surgical. Those names identify each maker only, since Clear Choice Medical has no manufacturer affiliation.

When you match a clamp, read the jaw pattern first. Jaws may carry cross serrations, longitudinal serrations or rows of fine teeth. Then check whether the tips have 1 x 2 teeth and whether the jaws are straight, curved or angled. Most titles give the overall length in inches or millimeters. For a long-shaft clamp built for minimally invasive work, compare the working length too. The photos let you look closely at the handles, the ratchet and the joint. Last, read any maker name, catalog number and stainless or titanium marking on the instrument.

Common questions about Surgical Clamps

Is a hemostat the same as a surgical clamp?

A hemostat is one type of surgical clamp, but the word clamp covers more instruments. Hemostats, also called hemostatic forceps or artery forceps, have finger ring handles and a ratchet that locks the jaws closed. The wider clamp family takes in bulldog clamps, towel clamps and tubing clamps. Listing titles also mix the words clamp and forceps. One Kocher may be titled a clamp while another is titled forceps. Some makers sell the Kocher under the name Rochester-Ochsner. When you search, try the pattern name with both words, such as Kelly clamp and Kelly forceps. Then compare the jaw photos, since the name alone may not settle the pattern.

What is the difference between Kelly, Crile and Mosquito hemostats?

Kelly and Crile hemostats differ mainly in their jaw serrations, while a Mosquito is a smaller and finer pattern. On a Crile, cross serrations run the full length of the jaw. On a Kelly, serrations cover only the half of the jaw nearest the tip. Both are often sold at about 5.5 inches, in straight and curved versions. A Mosquito has fine tips and short, fully serrated jaws, and 5 inches is the usual length. Titles may call it a Halsted Mosquito, while a Hartmann Mosquito is finer still. A Kocher is a related pattern with full serrations plus 1 x 2 teeth at the tip. Look closely at the jaws in the photos to confirm which pattern a listing shows.

What is a DeBakey clamp?

A DeBakey clamp is a vascular clamp with DeBakey jaws, which usually carry 1 x 2 rows of fine teeth. Ring-handled versions lock with a ratchet like a hemostat. The words after DeBakey in a title name the clamp style, such as multi-purpose or tangential occlusion. Then compare how long the jaws are and the angle stated in degrees, such as 60 degrees or 90 degrees. Note whether the shanks are straight, angled or curved as well. A title may also mention a DeBakey jaw on another pattern, such as a Glover or Beck clamp. Read closely to see whether DeBakey names the clamp or only its jaw. Fogarty-style clamps work differently, since they hold separate jaw inserts in lengths such as 33, 61 and 86 mm. Look at the title and photos for any inserts that come with the clamp.
