You may also see these instruments called surgical needle drivers. Ring-handled patterns on this page include Mayo-Hegar, Crile-Wood, Ryder and Halsey. Spring-handled patterns include Castroviejo and Barraquer. Jacobson needle holders here come in micro and titanium versions. Laparoscopic and scissor needle holders appear as well. Titles name makers such as Jarit, Codman and Symmetry, as well as Snowden-Pencer and Scanlan. Jarit, Codman and the other makers named here have no affiliation with Clear Choice Medical, which is an independent dealer.

Start with the jaw wording, where the common terms are smooth, serrated and delicate. Note whether the jaws are straight or curved, and check any jaw size given in millimeters. A title that reads TC or titanium is naming the material rather than the pattern. Check whether the handles lock, since titles flag this with words such as ratchet, catch or non-locking. Micro titles may also list a tip width, such as 0.5 mm. Match the overall length to the needle holder you use now, whether the title gives it in inches or centimeters. Laparoscopic needle holders are sized by diameter and working length, for example 5 mm and 33 cm. Laparoscopic handles also differ in shape, and a curved jaw may turn left or right.

Common questions about Surgical Needle Holders

What is the difference between a needle holder and a needle driver?

A needle holder and a needle driver are the same instrument under two names. It grips a suture needle in short jaws that are often textured. Some references also call it needle forceps. Hand-instrument makers such as Scanlan and Katena list it as a needle holder. Some robotic and laparoscopic catalogs use needle driver instead. Nearly every title on this page uses needle holder rather than needle driver. Pair that term with a pattern name, such as Mayo-Hegar or Castroviejo, when you search. Whatever the name, the pattern, jaw and length details in the title are what set one item apart from another.

What does TC mean on a needle holder?

TC stands for tungsten carbide, which means the jaws carry tungsten carbide inserts. Titles may also write it as T/C, tungsten carbide or carbide. The inserts form the gripping surface, while the rest of the instrument is usually stainless steel. Many makers finish TC needle holders with gold handles or gold finger rings, so the color works as a quick visual cue. Check the listing photos for gold handles when a title leaves the marking out. Some brands also use their own names for the jaw surface. Jarit uses Carb-Bite, and Snowden-Pencer uses Diamond-Jaw. Scanlan lists Diamond Dust jaws on its micro needle holders. Treat these names as descriptions of the jaw surface when you compare two listings.

What is the difference between a Mayo-Hegar and a Castroviejo needle holder?

A Mayo-Hegar has finger-ring handles with a ratchet, while a Castroviejo has spring handles worked with the fingertips. The Mayo-Hegar pattern usually has wide, cross-serrated jaws with a central groove. Mayo-Hegar listings give the overall length, often in inches. Castroviejo jaws are finer, and some titles state the jaw length in millimeters. Castroviejo handles may be flat or round, and the pattern is made with or without a lock. Many Castroviejo titles also state a straight or curved jaw. For either pattern, match the jaw surface and length to the instrument you already use.
