Self-retaining retractors for sale on this page include Weitlaner, Gelpi and Beckman patterns. Hand-held patterns include Senn, Hohmann, Deaver and Volkmann retractors. Double-ended patterns such as Army and Crile retractors carry a blade at each end. You will also find Meyerding and Balfour retractors, laparoscopic fan retractors and eye speculums. Brands you will see here include V. Mueller, Jarit, Codman and Aesculap. None of these makers is affiliated with Clear Choice Medical, an independent dealer. For spine and orthopedic retractor sets, see the separate Surgical Retractor Sets page.

Most retractor titles state the sizes you need for a match. On rakes and self-retaining patterns, count the prongs and note sharp or blunt tips. On bladed patterns, compare blade width, depth and curve. Check overall length, and for laparoscopic retractors, the diameter and working length. Also note the handle style and any ratchet, hinged arms or angled shanks. Then compare the catalog number in the title with the markings on the instrument you want to match.

Common questions about Surgical Retractors

What does 3x4 mean on a Weitlaner retractor?

On a Weitlaner retractor, 3x4 means one arm carries three prongs and the other carries four. The same shorthand appears as 2x3 on some Weitlaner retractors and as 4x4 on other self-retaining patterns. The prongs on a given retractor are either sharp or blunt, and the title usually says which. A ratchet between the ring handles holds the spread you set. Catalogs commonly list Weitlaner retractors in lengths such as 5-1/2, 6-1/2 and 8 inches. Also check whether the arms are straight, angled or hinged. Some listing titles spell the name Weitlander, so search for both spellings when you look for a match.

What is a Hohmann retractor?

A Hohmann retractor is a hand-held retractor with a flat, contoured blade that narrows to a shaped tip. Some catalogs list it as a bone lever or a Hohmann bone elevator. The tip may be leaf-shaped, round or square, and some tips are sharp while others are blunt. Titles usually give the blade width in millimeters and the overall length in inches or metric units. Mini Hohmann titles describe narrow blades, such as 6 mm or 8 mm. When you compare listings, check the tip shape, any bend or angle in the blade and the handle style. The catalog number in the title helps you match the exact model.

What is the difference between a Gelpi and a Weitlaner retractor?

A Gelpi retractor has a single prong on each arm, while a Weitlaner has two or more prongs on each arm. Both are self-retaining patterns with finger ring handles and a ratchet that holds the spread. On a Gelpi, each prong turns outward to the side, and catalogs write the layout as 1 x 1. Weitlaner arms carry two to six prongs, so titles show counts such as 2 x 3 or 3 x 4. In a listing title, check the pattern name, the prong count and whether the tips are sharp or blunt. Then compare overall length and the shape of the arms. Wiltse-Gelpi names a Gelpi pattern with long shanks, and Beckman-Weitlaner names a Weitlaner with hinged arms. Some maker catalogs also give jaw depth in millimeters, such as 17 mm on one Weitlaner.
