Laparoscopic and endoscopic instruments here include graspers, dissectors and scissors, with Maryland and Babcock patterns among them. Some are modular designs that split into an insert, an outer sheath and a handle, such as the Karl Storz Clickline system. You will also find trocars and cannulas, biopsy forceps and monopolar cables. Endoscopic camera heads appear on the equipment side as well. Karl Storz, Stryker and Olympus listings appear here. Aesculap, Snowden-Pencer and Richard Wolf items show up too. Clear Choice Medical sells these as an independent dealer, not affiliated with any manufacturer.

Two numbers describe most laparoscopic equipment: the diameter and the working length. A title that reads 5 mm x 34 cm usually gives the shaft diameter first and the working length second. Then compare the jaw pattern, such as fenestrated or serrated, and whether the jaw is single or double action. Insulated shafts with a monopolar post are a separate choice from non-insulated versions. Handle type matters too, since ratcheting and rotating handles vary by system family. For a laparoscope, compare the diameter and working length with the direction of view, such as 0 degrees or 30 degrees.

Listings turn over as items sell, so match the model number and photos against your current setup. Browse the current listings, or contact Clear Choice Medical with a reference number you need to match.

Common questions about Laparoscopy & Endoscopy

What is the difference between laparoscopy and endoscopy equipment?

Laparoscopy equipment is one part of the wider group called endoscopy equipment. An endoscope is a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens for viewing inside the body. A laparoscope is the type of endoscope used to look inside the abdomen. So every laparoscope is an endoscope, but many endoscopes are not laparoscopes. Endoscopy equipment can also mean scopes for other areas of the body and the light cables that connect to them. Laparoscopic instruments are the long, narrow graspers, scissors and needle holders used alongside the laparoscope. A listing title usually names the item type, such as laparoscope, grasper or light cable.

What should I compare on laparoscopic needle holders?

Compare the jaw curvature, the jaw inserts and the handle before you look at size. Karl Storz lists its KOH needle holders with jaws curved to the left or to the right. Those models have tungsten carbide inserts and single action jaws. Laparoscopic handles can be axial, in line with the shaft, or pistol grip. Some handles have a ratchet that can be disengaged. Storz also states which side the ratchet release sits on. One KOH model is 3.5 mm in size with a working length of 36 cm. It also has a Luer lock connector for cleaning. Match these details to the model number in the listing title.

What do jaw shape and jaw length mean on laparoscopic scissors?

Jaw shape describes the profile of the scissor blades, and jaw length is how long those blades are. Karl Storz lists CLICKLINE scissors inserts with straight jaws, conical jaws or jaws that do not cross. Jaw lengths in that line include 6 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm. Some inserts also list serrated toothing on the blade. These figures are separate from the 5 mm size and the working length, such as 30 cm or 36 cm. Karl Storz sells scissors inserts as separate catalog items. Check the listing title and photos to see which parts are included.
