Orthopedic power tools are powered surgical instruments: drills and saws built around a motor-driven handpiece. Saw handpieces come in sagittal, oscillating and reciprocating designs. Surgical drills include micro drills, high-speed drills and pneumatic drill sets. Stryker listings include System 8, CORE and TPS equipment. Hall, Midas Rex, MicroAire and Smith & Nephew pieces appear as well. Clear Choice Medical is not affiliated with Stryker or any other manufacturer.

These surgical power tools work as a system, so match each attachment, battery or cable to the handpiece family it was built for. Compare the power source first, whether battery, electric console or pneumatic hose. Orthopedic drill attachments differ by coupling, such as Trinkle, Hudson or Jacobs chuck. Also compare the attachment length and whether it is straight or angled. Battery and charger listings name the system they belong to, so check that name against your handpiece. Availability shifts as items sell, so read the model number and included pieces before you order.

Browse the handpieces and attachments above, or contact Clear Choice Medical to confirm a system family before you buy.

Common questions about Orthopedic Power Tools

What is the difference between a sagittal saw, an oscillating saw and a reciprocating saw?

They are three separate saw handpieces, and the sagittal and reciprocating types move the blade in different ways. In a sagittal saw, the blade oscillates back and forth in the plane in which it lies. In a reciprocating saw, the blade moves back and forth along its own length. Stryker catalogs the oscillating saw as a handpiece of its own, separate from the sagittal saw. Its RemB line lists the oscillating saw as 6400-031 and the sagittal saw as 6400-034. Its reciprocating saw is 6400-037. The System 8 sagittal saw also has a blade mount that indexes in steps of 45 degrees. Compare the saw type and reference number in the title, since the word saw alone does not identify the handpiece.

What do CORE, TPS, RemB and System 8 mean on Stryker drills?

They are names of Stryker power systems and handpiece lines, and they tell you which platform a piece belongs to. CORE stands for Consolidated Operating Room Equipment, a console-driven system. Its CORE 2 console powers bone drills, saws, drivers and shavers. TPS stands for Total Performance System. RemB is a line of corded electric handpieces that Stryker lists for use with CORE and TPS. System 8 is a battery-powered heavy-duty system. Stryker's instructions for use include a For Use With table naming the equipment meant for each console. Compare a listing's reference number with that table for the system you run.

What is the difference between a handswitch and a footswitch on a surgical drill?

A handswitch attaches to the handpiece so it can be run from the hand, while a footswitch connects to the console. Stryker describes its RemB Electric Hand Switch as attached to the handpiece, allowing direct operation. Its CORE 2 console has two footswitch ports next to its three handpiece ports. Both controls are sold as separate parts with their own reference numbers. For example, the CORE Saber Handswitch is 5400-121-000 and the CORE Footswitch is 5402-007-000. Some handswitches are made for one drill family, such as the Saber or Sumex. So a drill listing may include a handswitch, a footswitch or neither. Check the title and photos for which control is included.
