Spine surgical instruments sit beside trauma and joint listings in this category. Rongeur patterns include Kerrison, pituitary and Leksell styles. You can also browse spine retractors, bone holding forceps, drill guides and screwdrivers. Cruciform screwdrivers are listed alongside hex drivers. Brand listings include Stryker, Zimmer and V. Mueller. Codman, Medtronic and Synthes pieces appear as well. Clear Choice Medical is an independent dealer and is not affiliated with any of these manufacturers.
Matching an item comes down to its specifications. On a Kerrison rongeur, compare the bite width, the bite angle and the working length. Many listing titles give these in millimeters and degrees, for example a 2 mm bite at 40 degrees up. Some bone rongeurs use a double action jaw, so check the jaw pattern and handle type too. For powered handpieces and attachments, confirm the system family and the connector before you buy.
Listings change as items sell, so read the model number and measurements on each page. Browse the current listings, or contact Clear Choice Medical if a detail you need is missing.
Common questions about Orthopedic, Spine & Neuro
What is an orthopedic instrument set?
An orthopedic instrument set is a group of instruments packed together in a case, often for one manufacturer's system. The technique guide for that system lists what belongs in each tray. Acumed gives a part number to every tray component in its 4.0 mm cannulated screw system. The case base, the lid and each tray carry their own numbers too. Orthofix packs the Firebird spinal system instruments in three cases, each with two tray levels. When you read a set listing, find the case or tray number first. Then compare the pieces in the photos with the manufacturer's tray list. A listing may show a full case, a partial set or an empty tray.
What does cannulated mean on orthopedic drills and instruments?
Cannulated means the instrument has a hollow center so it can pass over a guide wire. Acumed's 4.0 mm cannulated screw system is one documented example. Its screws are cannulated for use over a guide wire. The same system includes a cannulated drill, tap, countersink and hex driver. The technique guide lists 1.3 mm guide wires for over-the-wire screw placement. The cannulated drill in that system is 2.7 mm with a quick connect end. On a listing, look for the system name, the size and the connection type in the title. Then check the technique guide for the guide wire diameter that system uses.
How do I find an orthopedic surgical instrument by its reference number?
Start with the catalog or reference number marked on the instrument, then look it up in that manufacturer's catalog or technique guide. Technique guides often print a part number beside each instrument. Acumed lists its 1.3 mm threaded guide wire as 80-2038. Orthofix lists the Firebird bone awl as 52-1001. A reusable instrument may also carry a UDI, which stands for unique device identifier. Under US rules, a reusable device that is reprocessed before each use generally must carry its UDI as a permanent mark on the device. The device identifier part of a UDI names the labeler and the model or version. You can search it in AccessGUDID, a public database.
