Kerrison rongeurs here come in Ferris Smith, Spurling and micro patterns, including ejector and detachable designs. Both cervical and lumbar Kerrison rongeurs are listed. Intervertebral disc rongeurs appear in Cushing, Love-Gruenwald and Caspar styles, alongside pituitary rongeurs. The laminectomy instruments include Williams discectomy retractors, Meyerding and Scoville retractors, and lamina spreaders. Current listings carry Codman, V. Mueller, Aesculap and Integra names. Clear Choice Medical is an independent dealer and is not affiliated with any manufacturer.

When you compare Kerrison rongeurs, start with bite width, then check the angle and working length. Angles are commonly listed as 40 degrees or 90 degrees, with the bite facing up or down. Footplate thickness and handle type also separate close models. For a disc rongeur, compare the cup size, the jaw direction and the working length. Availability changes as items sell, so confirm the model number and measurements in each listing. Browse the current listings, or contact Clear Choice Medical with a question about any spine surgical instruments shown here.

Common questions about Spine Decompression

What is a lamina spreader?

A lamina spreader is a self-retaining spine spreader that holds its jaws open, often with a ratchet. AccessGUDID records classify Inge lamina spreaders as reusable self-retaining surgical retractors. Catalogs sell lamina spreaders under pattern names such as Inge and Cloward. The jaws may carry teeth or cross serrations, and some models have no teeth. Makers list the length, as with Symmetry Inge spreaders at 6 1/4 inches and 10 inches. Some catalogs also mark a child or adult size. Jaw figures vary by maker. An Aesculap Inge model lists a 6 mm jaw width and a 28.5 mm jaw depth, while Ambler states jaw opening in millimeters. In a listing title, look for the pattern name, the jaw surface and the length first. Then compare any jaw width or jaw opening figure with the maker's catalog.

What is an intervertebral disc rongeur?

An intervertebral disc (IVD) rongeur is a spine rongeur that catalogs describe for grasping and removing disc material. It is sold under pattern names such as Cushing, Love-Gruenwald, Ferris Smith and Caspar. Jaws may be straight or curved up or down, and serrated or non-serrated. Some jaws are fenestrated, and some models have bayoneted shafts. Handles come in finger-ring and Ferris-Smith-Kerrison styles, and some add a locking ratchet. Catalogs may give jaw size as two figures in millimeters, as with a Caspar IVD rongeur at 3 x 12 mm. The same catalog offers these rongeurs in more than one working length. Read the pattern name first, then match the jaw figures, handle style and working length.

What is a laminectomy retractor?

Laminectomy retractor is a name used for spine retractors, and the related patterns come in hand-held and self-retaining forms. A hand-held retractor has no locking mechanism, so it must be held in place. A self-retaining retractor uses a locking mechanism to keep its blades apart. The gSource catalog lists Meyerding and Taylor retractors as hand-held. Its self-retaining group lists Meyerding laminectomy retractors and Taylor laminectomy blades. Scoville retractors and Williams discectomy retractors are in that group too. The Scoville retractor is sold as body only, with its blades and hooks listed separately. So read the title for hand-held or self-retaining first. Then check which frame, blades or hooks the photos show.
