Vaginal speculum patterns on this page include Graves and Pederson. Nasal listings include Killian septum speculums and Vienna nasal speculums. The page also lists transsphenoidal speculums, ear speculums and Brinkerhoff rectal speculums. Maker names in the titles include Storz, Integra Miltex and Jarit. Symmetry and Aesculap pieces appear as well. Clear Choice Medical operates as an independent dealer and has no ties to these manufacturers.
On a speculum with blades, blade length and blade width are the first figures to compare. Some titles give blade length as depth, such as 50 mm deep. Overall length is a separate figure and is often given in inches. Next, compare the handle and any lock, such as a set screw or ratchet. Note whether the blades are straight or curved, and whether they carry a black coating. Then read the catalog number in the title and compare it with any markings visible in the photos.
Common questions about Surgical Speculums
What is the difference between a Graves and a Pederson speculum?
A Graves speculum has wider blades than a Pederson speculum, and it is the larger of the two patterns. Both are vaginal speculums with two blades joined at a hinge. Each pattern is made in several sizes, often labeled small, medium or large. A size word does not state the blade dimensions, so compare the measurements instead. One maker lists a medium Graves with blades 1-3/8 by 4 inches. The same maker lists a medium Pederson with blades 1 by 4-3/8 inches. Titles may give the width or the length first. On these two patterns, the smaller figure is the blade width.
How are nasal speculums sized?
Nasal speculums are sized mainly by blade length, stated in millimeters. Killian septum speculums have long blades. Catalogs list Killian blade lengths such as 50, 64, 76 and 90 mm. Vienna nasal speculums have much shorter blades, such as 27, 30 or 33 mm in one maker's catalog. Size numbers do not match across product lines. One catalog lists a size 2 Killian with 64 mm blades and another size 2 with 50 mm blades. Read the millimeter figure rather than the size number. Also check the handle. Some Killian speculums have a set screw that locks the blades open, which catalogs call self-retaining.
How are ear speculums sized?
Ear speculums are sized by the opening at the tip, which is given in millimeters and often paired with a size number. A round tip has one diameter, such as 5 mm. An oval tip lists two figures, such as 3 mm by 4 mm. One maker's round set runs from size 1 at 3.0 mm to size 4 at 7.0 mm inside diameter. Catalogs may list both inside and outside diameters, so check which one a title gives. Compare the length as well, since some titles mark a short or infant version. A listing can hold a single speculum or a set of several. Count the pieces in the listing photos, which show the actual item.
