A rongeur is a hinged instrument with cupped jaws that bite away bone. A bone curette has a cup or ring tip on a handle for scraping. Other bone rongeurs listed here include Ruskin, Beyer and Lempert patterns, duckbill rongeurs and Liston bone cutting forceps. Kerrison rongeurs also appear in this category. Curette listings cover oval cup, ring and angled designs, sold singly or in sets. Makers named in these listings include Zimmer, Codman and V. Mueller, along with Aesculap. Clear Choice Medical is not affiliated with them.

For orthopedic rongeurs, compare bite width, jaw curve and working length. Also note whether the handle action is single or double. Jaws may be straight, curved or angled, so check the photos for the exact profile. For a curette, compare the size number, the cup shape and whether the shank is straight or angled. Curette sizes use numbers such as 000, 0 or 4, so match the size stated in the listing. Where a catalog number is marked on the instrument, match it to the piece you are replacing. The mix changes as items sell, so treat each listing as the source for exact dimensions.

Browse the rongeurs and curettes above, or contact Clear Choice Medical about a pattern you need to match.

Common questions about Rongeurs & Curettes

What do bone curette size numbers like 000 and 4 mean?

A curette size number ranks cup size within one pattern, with higher numbers larger and extra zeros smaller. STERIS lists Lempert oval cup curettes from size 0000 at 2.1 x 3.2 mm up to size 2 at 4 x 6 mm. Some catalogs write zero sizes as fractions, such as #1/0 or #2/0. The number is not a fixed measurement across patterns. A size 1 Lempert cup is 3.6 x 5.1 mm, while a gSource #1 oval bone curette is 6.9 mm. Where a listing gives millimeters, compare those figures along with the number and the pattern name.

What is the difference between a Cobb curette and a Cobb elevator?

A Cobb curette and a Cobb elevator are different instruments that share the Cobb name. Catalogs size them in different ways. The gSource catalog lists its 11 inch Cobb curettes by size number, from #3/0 up to #6, in straight and angled forms. It lists its 11 inch Cobb elevators by width instead, from 1/4 inch to 1 1/4 inches. A set title may not say which pieces are curettes and which are elevators. So check each piece in the photos rather than relying on the name. In that catalog a size number marks a curette and a width marks an elevator.

What is the difference between a cup curette and a ring curette?

A cup curette ends in a cup and a ring curette ends in a ring, and catalogs describe the two differently. Cups are described by outline, such as round, oval or teardrop. The gSource catalog offers cups in closed or fenestrated versions. An oval cup can be sized by two figures, as with a STERIS Lempert cup at 3 x 4.6 mm. Ring curettes can be listed by a size number and one width instead. The gSource catalog lists a straight #0 ring curette with a 6 mm ring, described as sharp and blunt. One pattern name can cover both designs, as with Karlin ring curettes and Karlin cup curettes. Read the tip word in the title before you compare sizes.
